A box of old comics for sale.

There were several places that had a box or small shelf with comics and graphic novels. There wasn’t anything worth getting, but it’s interesting to see the types of comics they had. They usually had some obscure stuff; mainstream comics like Batman and Spider-Man were few and far between. I kind of wish that graphic novels had a bigger presence at the fair though.

Some of the costume players at C2E2.

There wasn’t too many cosplayers at the convention, but there were notable ones that I thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take pics of them all since my camera was on the fritz again. There was a group of young kids who were all dressed up as Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender doing cool poses. I love it when parents dress their kids up; soooooo cute! :D

I hope there will be more costume participation next year. Maybe, if I have the time, I’ll put together a costume as well. :P

Statues on display at the DC booth in C2E2.

Okay… I admit that I was seriously contemplating laying down cash for these statues. Especially the Zatanna one. But luckily for me they were display purposes only, as sneak previews. They’ll be released later on in the year.

Longboxes full of comics for sale at a vendor at C2E2.

I have plenty of comics. I used to buy them to try and complete a series, but now I rather buy issues that I just like to read. I have boxes and boxes and boxes of comic books back home in Maryland, but I’ve got quite a stack growing now in my apartment. They’re not bagged and boarded; I’m not into collecting them as much as I used to. Now I just read them for my enjoyment. It’s definitely less stressful on my mind as well as my wallet. :P

Marvel EIC, Joe Quesada, doing an interview at the Marvel booth.

I remember back when Quesada was drawing “Ash,” a firefighter with super powers. I think he’s been doing a pretty good job as the Editor-in-Chief of Marvel. My only grip is “Brand New Day,” but hey, I think with Spidey being around for so long, you just have to take some risks with continuity to try and tell a good story. I really love what he’s done with the Avengers the past few years… they are definitely today’s “X-Men” when it comes to Marvel’s most popular team.

I didn’t get to meet him personally; I didn’t feel like waiting in the long line. But I still thought it was cool to see a guy very high up in the industry in person.

George R.R. Martin at the Avatar booth doing autographs and signings.

I was so psyched to get my copy of “A Game of Thrones” signed by the author himself. However, I also brought a whole slew of things for him to sign. Because really, I wasn’t sure when the next time I might get this opportunity again. So in addition to my book I also had: “The Living Dead,” a book of compilations of short stories about zombies which included one by GRRM; the graphic novel adaptations of “The Hedge Knight;” and an issue of “Fevre Dream” that I bought at the booth to help support his promotion. I also had another copy of “A Game of Thrones” that my friend had sent me to get it signed. :)

I love going to see writers and artists at conventions. Not only do you get to meet them, you can get an autograph, tell them how awesome they are, maybe you can ask them a question or get a photo with them… but also these are great opportunities to hang around other fans. When I was waiting in line for the Friday Night Show, it was so much fun to talk ASoIaF with other fans and readers. We recollected our favorite characters and moments… lots of fun and pretty much awesome.

One of the banners for C2E2 when walking towards the entrance at McCormick Place.

I love comic book conventions. I’ve only been to a few, Baltimore Comic-Con and Wizard World Chicago Comic Con, but I always enjoyed attending them. This was the first ever Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, or the more aptly named “C2E2.” It was also my first time at McCormick Place. It’s a really big convention center; there was another convention taking place, for kitchens, I think.

I’m a bit experienced with comic book conventions so I came prepared with my comics and books to get signed and my sketch book to collect some drawings from my favorite artists. However, while there was a good handful of great artists and writers, I wasn’t too keen on getting my comics signed as I used to. Nowadays, I just love conventions for getting more sketches, meeting the creators themselves, browsing the vendors for any unique deals and rare finds, attending various panels to get more insights or announcements, and of course, taking pictures of the cosplayers.

My only disappointment with C2E2 was probably the low number of costumes. Usually, there would be crowds of people dressed as comic book/movie/anime/cartoon characters. However, there was a sparse number of them around. But I think I can overlook this since this is the first C2E2 ever. I think as long as it continues every year, the attendance and participation will grow, just as the San Diego Comic-con did.
